Gentlemen start your…

We’re all hearing about the environment and green energy these days. We have hybrid cars and with the price of gasoline this week, maybe it’s time to rethink the whole NASCAR thing.

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

the roar of the engines- replaced by the whine of the batteries? NASCAR, if they were to follow through on your vision, could be a real proving ground for the engineers of the “new” generation of automobiles. Or not.

For most of the people living out on the plains an electric car is probably not a good idea, although my wife drives a 6 mile round trip to work every day and this kind of technology might work for her. Anyone out there on the road selling for a living, belly to belly, would be hamstrung by this stuff.

Hey what am I saying- its the weekend…lighten up you big lug!

  2. I couldn’t agree more. I’ve always had a problem with Nascar.

    (Warning, rant ahead)

The Daytona 500, has 43 entries this year. In the 2010 Daytona 500 cars drove an average of just over 450 miles (due to some accidents and mechanical failures during the race). For the 43 cars this year, the cars will drive around 19, 350 miles. That’s well over 5 round trips from Denver to Daytona Beach and back.

Each car gets around 4.5 miles to the gallon, so they will use about 4,300 gallons of gas.

Oh, and get this, they use Octane 110 LEADED gasoline. LEADED!!!

And there are two other races this weekend at Daytona. A 250 for trucks and a 300 for cars with roughly the same number of entrants. We’re talking roughly 10,000 gallons of leaded gasoline used by the race cars in one weekend (not counting practices and qualifying).

This year there are 36 race weekends plus the “Showdown” and “All-Star Race” events in May.

    (end rant)

    Thanks,

    Marcus

  3. Marcus: +1. I’m also thinking that as energy prices become more prohibitive, stadiums like Lincoln Field (Which is 100% self-sustaining, and even returns clean energy to the City of Philadelphia) will become the norm. Slap some solar panels on Dick’s Sporting Goods Park or Coors Field!

  4. I have been trying to make this point for 5 years now. Nascar is an official waste of gas. I enjoy the races but I don’t think it is worth wasting a resource needed for the counrty. Any good blogs or articles on Nascar’s “vision”?

  5. I kind of like the idea of the hum/whine of the batteries…….I sort of picture wrecks like Arte Johnson and his tricycle on Laugh in…….Have a great weekend!

  6. Gene,

I remember going to spring training and pulling into a grocery store in Chandler, Arizona. There were as many golf carts in the parking lot as there were cars.

    Have a fun weekend.

  7. Badger,

I think they should just have moonlight baseball like the do in bowling. Just make the ball glow and play in the dark.

  8. Reggie,

I don’t know of any blogs about NASCARS vision for the future…I think they’re too worried about the TV ratings to address anything like fuel consumption.

  9. Sherri,

the Arte Johnson comment made my day. I’m still laffing at the mere thought of it! You have a great weekend too

  10. Dear Drew,

Loved the drawing. The only thing missing from the picture was for each driver to have a bag full of golf clubs in he back.

Yeah, the “car of tomorrow” do make me think of golf carts. It may soon get to the point where the “car of the day after tomorrow will look like the things we see at the Soap Box Derby. That is about as “green” as you can get.

    All the best.

  11. Good Morning from Omaha,

ONe of my uncles, who lives in florida, resides in a community that is over run with “golf carts”. They are cheaper to operate than a regular car and if you aren’t going any appreciable distance like over 15 miles or so and its not raining you should be fine.

Cold to them is 50 degrees and they break out the jackets etc. right now we would love for it to be 50 or so as a sign that spring is on its way.

we have looked into these new cars with the electric motors etc and they are nice enough but we joke that we have to use a toaster for heat but that would run the battery down too fast and we would be stranded.

You have a great weekend also..see you monday.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.
