The Immaculate Deflection!

I ended up doing a couple of cartoons on the Immaculate Deflection (so named by my former colleague at the News, Chuck Hickey). This was the other one, and since I think it will be one of those moments that will live on Broncos History I figured what the heck, it’s worth showing you another cartoon about it… Hope you like it.

  1. Good Morning from Omaha,

what a great catch and smart play by stokely. The way the raiders played the chargers and the chiefs gave the ravens a good game, or at least the ravens played down to their competition, its too early to tell.

sometimes its better to be lucky than good. the bronco’s will have to get better and they will. And so will the other teams in the afc west. if not this year maybe next.

Strive for excellence, nothing but your best.

    Gene

  2. I’ve enjoyed watching that play several dozen times on my DVR!!!

What made that play even more fun to watch was hearing Gus Johnson’s

excitement during the “Immaculate Deflection!” Really exciting ending

to the Broncos season opener! 🙂

    Stokely came to play!!!

(which is more than I can say about Marshall!)

  3. I have been calling it the ‘Miracle Catch’ for I hope this will be a miracle season. With a bit of luck, maybe these guys can walk away from the game with a bit of confidence, thinking that if they just keep on trying, never quit, they can win every game.

Sorry, I couldn’t settle on just one memory of the greatest play. The first Superbowl win had so many and even that entire season was packed with fantastic plays like Eddie Mac’s block on the linebacker (pancaked him and simply pointed his finger at him while he laying on the ground) to spring Tyrell Davis for a TD. Or the one where …

Hopefully we will be saying the same thing about this season too?

  4. Ok, the little shamrock on the helmet was funny – this one is hysterical!! The Gods definitely looked down upon us. It was definitely a “two cartoon” play! Thanks for making me smile in the morning!

  5. Great play, but nowhere near the greatest play in Broncos’ history. The first game of the year cannot compete with the stage of the Super Bowl. Now, if the Broncos want to duplicate this in February…

Realistically, this team should be happy to finish .500 this year, so I will enjoy the Stokley catch for what it is: a great start to another glorious NFL season.

  6. Stokley’s catch reminded me of a cartoon you did when CU got the 5th down when they played Missouri. That was a classic.

  7. I was at the game in Ciny, and let me tell you, watching 70,000 some people go from the high of a game winning deflection to the crushing punch of a touchdown as just magical. I’ll remember that feeling for my entire life.
